Friday, Feb. 19

• How can I grow beautiful roses? A gardening workshop will be offered by Terre Ashmore, 10 a.m. to noon at Frazier Mountain Park (by the Community Center rose bushes). The focus will be on pruning roses, local soils and environment. Bring gloves, a note pad and pen. A donation of epsom salts for the roses is requested. Bring a lunch and stay to enjoy the park.

• AARP members will meet for lunch, 11:30 a.m. at the Ranch House Restaurant in Gorman (49713 Gorman Post Road).

• It’s Science Fair Night at Gorman Elementary School. Parents can view student projects 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 to 6 p.m. Awards will be presented at 6 p.m.

• The 2016 Easter Egg Hunt and BBQ planning meeting will be held at Your Tshirt Man (3441 Mt. Pinos Way, FP), 10 a.m. RSVP 661.245.2350.

• ‘Spinning Magnet Motors’ is the Science Saturday topic with Professor Cliff Brunk. How does the push and pull of electro-magnets turn the shaft of a motor? How do they know when to push and when to pull? It’s at Frazier Park Library, 10 a.m. for the curious of all ages.

• Kern County is 150 Years old and Mountain Community landowners were founding fathers. Learn more about Samuel Bishop as Bonnie Kane, Ridge Route Museum’s historian, is featured at the Kern County Museum’s celebration 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Kane will present a talk on Bishop at 11:30 a.m. The event is free (3801 Chester Ave, Bakersfield, 93301).

• The Full Moon Night Hike, 5:45–7:15 p.m., shows Wind Wolves Preserve in a different light, for ages 6 and up. For reservations call 661.858.1115 / windwolvespreserve@twc-ca.org.

• A low cost spay/neuter clinic for cats or dogs will be offered at Shelter on the Hill (879 Lebec Rd., Lebec). A $20 voucher is available at the Family Resource Center. • Kern County Parks and Recreation will host a second community meeting to discuss possible restriction of alcohol, tobacco, e-cigarettes and marijuana use at Frazier Mountain Park, 6:30 p.m. in the Frazier Mountain Park Community Center, 3801 Park Dr., FP.

Ongoing and Upcoming

• Sign up before February 26 to reserve your seat on a free Photo Safari tour of the Tejon Ranch Conservancy for students ages 10–18, Saturday, March 5, 9 a.m.–1 p.m. Naturalist Scot Pipkin is the guide. • On Saturday, Feb. 27 the annual Pine Needle Basket Weaving Class will be held at the Ridge Route Communities Museum, from 10 a.m. to noon. The class costs $10 and supplies are provided. • The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) will be at the Family Resource Center (FRC) on the first and third Thursdays from 9 a.m to noon. Call the Community Action Partnership of Kern (CAPK) at 211 or the FRC at 661.245.4303, to see if you qualify.

• The Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve is accepting volunteer applications for the upcoming wildflower season (March–May). Two Saturday training sessions are required, Feb. 20 and 27. • The Third Annual Mountain Youth Photo Contest is still open for submissions. If you have not submitted a photo yet, what are you waiting for? Entries will be accepted now until March 19 in three age categories: 6–10, 11–14 and 15–18. Cash prizes will be awarded for first, second and third entries in each category. Get your submission form and turn them in at the Frazier Park Library, The Mountain Enterprise, Artworks Gallery, Basecamp, the Pine Mountain Club front desk, www.MountainEnterprise.com and in this week’s paper on page 6. The Opening Party/Reception is Saturday, April 16, 5 p.m., at the Frazier Park Library.
