Friday, Apr. 8

• Today is Family Day at the Friends of the Library Book Sale. Children will receive a free book (Frazier Park Library, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. on Park Drive).

• Not sure what to wear for the Frazier Mountain High School Prom? The FMHS Prom Fashion Show at 1 p.m. will showcase the latest styles for ladies and gents. This year’s prom is set for Saturday, May 14. The theme will be ‘A Midsummer’s Dream.’

• What’s to laugh about, raising an autistic child? Comedian and author Kirk Smith presents a heartfelt show based on experiences with his autistic son, 6–9:30 p.m. at Canyon Hills Assembly of God Church, 7001 Auburn Street, Bakersfield. Tickets are $10 at www.kernautism.org and include a showing of ‘Enough is Enough,’ a film about bullying by Inclusion Films, a local program for disabled young adults interested in filmmaking. The event is a benefit for the Kern Autism Network during National Autism Awareness Month.

• It’s Half-Price Day at the Friends of the Library Book Sale for the Frazier Park Library, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Stock up on your spring reading materials.

• ‘Make Every Day Earth Day’ activities will include arts and crafts, replanting a community garden, mural painting and presentations on recycling. The fun is hosted 9 a.m.–noon by Kern County Kiwanis Club and the Community Action Partnership of Kern at the Friendship House Community Center, 2424 Cottonwood Rd., Bakersfield (661.369.8926). • Expand your senses during a Black Out Night Hike at Wind Wolves Preserve, 7:15–9:15 p.m. Do some star gazing and learn about the creatures that come out here after dark. For reservations, contact 661.858.1115/windwolvespreserve@twc-ca.org. Go north on I-5 for 19.4 miles, exit west on SR 166 for 14.6 miles (16019 Maricopa Highway), about a 40-minute drive.

• Burgers for reading books? The In-N-Out Burger ‘Cover to Cover Reading Club’ is for students 4 to 12 years old. Sign up at the Frazier Park Library. You have until April 16 to win a free burger coupon for every five books you read (up to three awards). Treat your family!

• The Kern County Birthday Bash celebrates the 150th Anniversary of the county’s formation on Saturday, April 16 from 2–8 p.m. at the Kern County Museum, 3801 Chester Ave., Bakersfield. • The 34th Annual Pine Mountain Club Lilac Festival is taking parade and booth applications. Mark your calendar for May 14–15. The festival is 9 a.m.–5 p.m. both days in the Pine Mountain Village Center. The parade begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Over 100 Arts and Crafts booths, food vendors, constant music and entertainment plus kids’ activities offer fun for everyone. Admission and parking are free.
