Saturday, September 17

• Get to know your local law enforcement at ‘Coffee with a Cop’ hosted by the CHP, 8–10 a.m. at Falcon’s Nest (3216 Mt. Pinos Way, FP). Come to shake the hand of those sworn to serve and protect our community.

• A day of recognition at 11 a.m. for our nation’s servicemen and women who are MIA or held as POWs is hosted by VFW Post 9791 (612 Canada Tr., FP). Come share your stories of your loved ones who served or are currently serving in the armed forces.

• Help our furry friends. Shelter on the Hill’s Annual Wine and Cheese benefit is, 3–6 p.m., at Tejon Ranch Vineyard with live music and fun auctions. Tickets are $35 at the door or $25 in advance (from the SOTH Thrift Store in Frazier Park).

• Fabulous photography by Lori Murphy and beautiful paintings by Jo Varney will share the spotlight at the next Artworks Community Gallery show in Pine Mountain Village. The opening reception will be held this evening at 6 p.m.

• ‘A Murdered Mystery’ is at the Ridge Route Communities Museum, 7 p.m. Help solve an intriguing case. Bring your briar pipe and Sherlock Holmes deerstalker hat to the museum (3515 Park Dr., FP) $15 includes hors d’oeuvres.

• The Big Thirst: The Secret Life and Turbulent Future of Water is the subject of a brainstorm about our own Mountain Communities based on Charles Fishman’s book, 6–8 p.m. at the Frazier Park Library. The book is at the library. Join in the discussion.

• Wildlife Biologist Vicki Monroe hosts a Bear Aware meeting by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, 7–8 p.m. at the PMC Clubhouse. The focus is avoiding human-wildlife conflicts. Everyone is invited. See story on page 22.

• 36,000 new neighbors may come with Tejon Ranchcorp’s Grapevine project, which combines 10,000 to 12,000 new homes with commercial, industrial development at the base of the Grapevine to Laval Road. The new Kern County Planning Commission hearing is now set for October 27 at 7 p.m. (11115 Truxtun Ave., ground floor in the Board of Supervisors chambers).
