• The 36th Annual Lilac Festival is today and tomorrow, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Skydivers start the parade today at 11 a.m. sharp! Fun, food, crafts booth and community. Free admission and parking. See the schedule on pages 10-11 of the May issue of The New Mountain Pioneer.

• Science Saturday explores the yummy question: What makes cookie dough different from cookies? What makes cookies ‘crispy’ or ‘chewy’? Professor Cliff Brunk assures us, ‘Of course we will bake some cookies.’ The fun happens at 10 a.m. at the library (3732 Park Dr., FP).

• Today is the deadline to submit comments on Tejon Ranch’s Centennial Project plan for consideration by the L.A. County Planning Commission land-use hearing June 6. Tejon proposes 19,333 homes and an estimated 10.2 million square feet of commercial / industrial development in 19 square miles from I-5 along SR-138, spanning Gorman to Neenach, which is currently open grasslands. • Public hearing about Antelope Valley groundwater storage agreements and carry over water is 10 a.m. at Antelope Valley-East Kern Water Agency (6450 West Avenue N., Palmdale 93551), where public comment will be considered. • Senior Sack provides healthy food staples from 10 a.m.–noon at Frazier Mountain Park Community Center (3801 Park Drive). Eligible recipients (with an annual income below $15,000) register once for $2, then twice a month may pick up a sack of fresh fruits and veggies, bread, boxed staples and canned food. Ongoing and Upcoming

• Spring Carnival at El Tejon School is Thursday, May 24. Open House is 5–5:30 p.m., to meet teachers, see students’ classrooms and celebrate their schoolwork. The Spring Carnival is 5:30–7 p.m. It’s a blast. Come support the students! All funds raised go to student activities.

• The annual Veteran’s Rally is Thursday, May 24 at 11:30 a.m. in the FMHS gym. Organized by students in the AP history class, this year’s event will include a tree-planting ceremony with the veterans.

* ‘Bob’s Outrageous Vegas Variety Night’ is Friday, May 25, 7–11 p.m. at PMC’s clubhouse. This Memorial Day program to honor our veterans and active military is a fundraiser benefiting the Pine Mountain Health Center, which doesn’t charge military or first responders for treatment.

• Gather your icky stuff: a Toxic Roundup Household Hazardous Waste drop-off collection is Saturday, May 26, 9 a.m–noon at Lebec Transfer Station (300 Landfill Road), for safely disposing of automotive fluids, batteries, fluorescent bulbs, household cleaners, paint, pesticides and sharps.

• Pay tribute to our nation’s heros: Bakersfield National Cemetery invites the public to attend a ceremony Saturday, May 26 at 9 a.m. honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. This event will include guest speakers, presentation of the colors, the national anthem, playing of taps and a rifle salute. Family members of those interred at the cemetery will be given priority in placing American flags at grave sites from 7–8:30 a.m. After the ceremony, volunteers will place the remaining flags on each headstone.

• The Wizard of Oz opens on May 27 for a 1 p.m. matinee at Pine Mountain clubhouse. Reserve tickets at 661.243.8022 or 242.3788. Tickets are $7. Encore performance is on June 3 at 1 p.m. See ad on page 2 for more information.
