• New Year’s Eve fun at Sue’s Tavern begins at 9 p.m. with live music provided by On Tap. The festivities will include food, party favors and a champagne toast at midnight.

• Take the Polar Bear Plunge 11 a.m. at McMurtrey Aquatic Center (1325 Q St., Bakersfield), swim 25 yards and get a steaming cup of cocoa. This traditional New Year’s Day plunge is $5 (and includes slides for swimmers 48” and taller), and swimsuits only are to be worn.

• Commodities food staples are distributed at Frazier Mountain Park Community Center, 11 a.m. (line begins forming around 10:30). Commodities takes place the first Wednesday of the month. See article on page 13 of our December 21 issue for more details and how to qualify.

Ongoing and Upcoming

• The Christmas Light Show in Pine Mountain Village happens nightly, with a 20-minute spectacle of lights and music from 6–10 p.m., throughout December. Be sure to stroll through the Enchanted Christmas Forest as well, near the gazebo.

• The Annual Craft Flaire at Artworks Community Gallery continues through Sunday, Dec. 30. The gallery (16233 Pine Valley Lane, Pine Mountain Village) is open Friday–Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.

• Holiday Lights at California Living Museum (CALM) is a dazzling show that runs nightly through Saturday, Jan. 5, 5:30–9 p.m. (10500 Alfred Harrell Highway, Bakersfield; 661.872.2256). Tickets are $6–12; children under three are free. Free train rides on the Candy Cane Express railroad, carousel rides and a concession stand operated by Teen Challenge will complete a memorable night out for the whole family.

• Bring a friend to celebrate the new year: AARP’s potluck luncheon is Thursday, Jan. 3 at 11:45 in the Senior Room of the Frazier Mountain Park Community Center. Bring your favorite dish and your table service. The speaker will be Pine Mountain resident Paul Edwards, to discuss story-telling. All seniors are invited; it is not required to be a member of AARP. If you don’t bring a dish or dessert, there is a $5 fee.
