• Love wildflowers? Today is the first of two training sessions for volunteers at the marvelous California Poppy Reserve in the Western Antelope Valley, 9 a.m.–3 p.m. (and same on February 8). This is an opportunity to learn and to serve. Volunteer jobs include staffing the gift shop and visitor center, walking trails and leading tours. No prior experience is needed. • Nothing like a rousing game of Bingo, right? The VFW makes it happen 7–9 p.m. at the VFW Hall (612 Canada Trail, Frazier Park, 661.245.3273). No latecomers, as no cards will be sold after 7:30 p.m. Proceeds go to help with good deeds for veterans and scholarships for kids.

* Enjoy the 54th Super Bowl at Pine Mountain Club’s Condor Room and Lounge at 3 p.m. It will feature a ‘tailgate food’ buffet, two big-screens for watching the game (and the commercials), drink specials and happy-hour prices on cocktails and beer during the game, plus raffles with fun prizes. For Roman numeral wonks, to impress your friends, this is Super Bowl LIV.

• Come out and cheer for the Frazier Mountain High School Falcons soccer teams at their Senior Night home games against Desert (700 Falcon Way, Lebec). Girls play at 3 p.m. and boys play at 5 p.m. Senior players will be honored between games.
• Ease into 2020 with Celtic Jam’s beautiful sound of the hammered dulcimer and other traditional instruments in song,
6–9 p.m. in the Pine Mountain clubhouse Condor Room. Bring an instrument and play along, or listen and enjoy! All are welcome.

• The AARP potluck luncheon is 11:45 a.m. in the Senior Room of the Frazier Mountain Park Community Center. Bring your favorite dish and a table service (plate and fork) for fun and enjoyable companionship. We will have live music by Mike and George, and there are great door prizes. Visitors welcome, and it is only $5 per year to join the local chapter.

• A unique collection of art and fashion by Megan Monroe and Lee Motivo at Artworks Community Gallery (16233 Pine Valley Lane, Pine Mountain Village) has a reception Saturday, Feb. 8, 5 p.m. Monroe’s fashions will be modeled, refreshments will be served and a rousing good community time will be had by all. • Do you love our annual Fiesta Days? It is produced by Mountain Memories Association (MMA) and relies on community involvement from people like you. Come meet your neighbors, have fun and help raise funds for good community deeds. The next MMA meeting is Sunday, Feb. 9, 5:30 p.m. at Caveman Cavey’s Pizza (3620 Mt Pinos Way, #107, Frazier Park). Bring your great ideas! These meetings will happen the second Sunday of each month. All are welcome. See story on page 2.
• The Sadie Hawkins Valentine’s dance at El Tejon Middle School is Friday, Feb. 14, 5:30–8 p.m. Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 at the door, which includes a meal.
• ‘Black and Ivory’ is the theme for the Frazier Mountain High School Winter Formal Friday, Feb. 28, 7–11 p.m. at Camp AREV in Cuddy Valley. Tickets are $15 per person or $25 per couple (students only). Ticket price includes dinner catered by Falcon’s Nest. Tickets are only available on a pre-sale basis.
• The Seventh Annual Mountain Youth Photo Contest invites budding photographers, 6 to 18 years of age, to submit their entries. Cash prizes will be awarded, along with lots of public admiration of your work. The deadline is Saturday, Feb. 29 (yay, leap year!).
