• Paying tribute to our nation’s heroes this Memorial Day weekend still looks different for pandemic reasons: Bakersfield National Cemetery will not hold a public ceremony but instead, as last year, an observance that can be attended virtually via cem.va.gov. The cemetery will be open all weekend, sunrise to sunset (30338 East Bear Mountain Blvd., Arvin 93203) for families wanting to continue the tradition of placing flowers and small flags, while observing all distancing rules.

• Passport to Paradise! The Class of 2022 will be hosting the 2021 FMHS Junior–Senior prom, 6–9 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency (24500 Town Center Drive, Valencia). Tickets are $65. Dinner will be served, and formal dress required. Event will be outside and will follow all local covid-19 safety guidelines.

• A Memorial Day celebration for the entire community is 11 a.m. at the Prosser Memorial at the eastern tip of Frazier Mountain Park (3801 Park Drive, where the flags are). Hosted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9791, it will be bring together local musicians, faith leaders and a possible special guest speaker said VFW Post Commander Gilbert Valenzuela (not quite confirmed by press time).

* This is the lot clearance deadline for Kern County residents. Kern County Fire Department officials will be inspecting, and fines start at $500 and can escalate to $1,500. With current drought conditions, it is imperative that everyone comply and do their lot clearance.

• Meadows Field Airport (BFL) discounts short-term parking for Memorial Day weekend Day to celebrate travel beginning to return to pre-pandemic normalcy. Until May 31, short-term rates are $2/hr. with a maximum of $10/day for long term parking and $13.00/day for short term parking.

• Virtual Valley Fever Support Group is Wednesday, June 9, 5-6 p.m., online. Kern Medical Valley Fever Institute is holding virtual sessions to help those who struggle with valley fever or would like to learn more about it. This group meets every second Wednesday of the month. Join in and find support at ValleyFeverInstitute.com/education-and-awareness/support-group/.

• The Frazier Mountain Health Fair will go on! Saturday, June 26, 9 a.m.–1 p.m., Frazier Park School. Come out for your life and health. Free tests of many kinds are available, and even some free dental screenings.

• Pine Mountain Club’s Concert on the Greens returns, with Rebel Heart kicking off, Saturday, June 26, 4:30–7 p.m. It is on the PMC golf course, so bring blankets and beach chairs. Food and drinks are available for purchase (no outside food or drink). Masks required, and social distancing recommended.

• Virtual Narcotics Anonymous and Al-Anon meetings are available during the covid-19 pandemic.
