• Make a difference at the Houchin Heartbeats Blood Drive, 8:30 a.m.–1 p.m., at Frazier Mountain High School (700 Falcon Way, Lebec), where one blood donor can equal three lives saved. Ages 7–12 are welcome to this free California State Parks program, where they’ll be winning prizes and learning exciting things about plants, animals and safety in our forest. When CHP sets up the snow visitor chain check line, you can be waved through if you display one for the current year. • Artists! The California Art Club’s Paint/Sculpt-Out is Saturday, Jan. 15, 8 a.m.–3 p.m., at Wind Wolves Preserve (16019 Maricopa Hwy, Bakersfield). The new Kern County chapter of the CAC invites you this painting and sculpting event on the historically and environmentally important 30,000-acre preserve. • Kern Community Foundation’s Kern Futures Scholarship application period is still open, Dec. 1–March 1, 2022. Graduating high school seniors planning to attend college, university or an accredited technical school are encouraged to apply. • The Housing Choice Voucher waiting list opens Friday, Jan. 28. This is the first time the waiting list has been reopened since 2012. Voucher recipients are selected randomly each month. Residents of Kern County are given preference over residents from other communities. For eligibility, guidelines, to apply for voucher assistance or get more information, visit hcv.kernha.org.

• Kern Economic Development Corporation hosts the 2022 State of the County, Saturday, Jan. 29, 7–8 p.m. This is a virtual event, held at www.kernedc.com. Featuring Kern County Board of Supervisors Chairman Zack Scrivner, county community leaders come together to discuss the upcoming year.
