• The Registration deadline for the Keep Kern Beautiful Community Clean-up event is today at 5 p.m. Keep Kern Beautiful is encouraging residents to participate in individual community clean-up efforts. Volunteers are asked to spend some of their day cleaning up areas around their neighborhoods and to share photos of their work by tagging @KernCountyPublicWorks and #KeepKernBeautiful. • The deadline for Covered California Open Enrollment is Monday, January 31 for those who need health insurance coverage. Many can qualify for financial assistance. Visit CoveredCA.com for help finding a licensed agent, to chat live with a representative, and for on-demand telephone assistance for new enrollees. • New Year registration for In The Wings Studio of Dance is open until January 31. Both current and new students are encouraged to sign up for special new year pricing. For those interested in an introduction to jazz, tap, hip-hop, ballet and more, call 661.245.5678.

• Kern Community Foundation’s Kern Futures Scholarship application period is still open, until March 1. Graduating high school seniors planning to attend college, university or an accredited technical school are encouraged to apply. • The Housing Choice Voucher waiting list opens Friday, Jan. 28. This is the first time the waiting list has been reopened since 2012. Voucher recipients are selected randomly each month. Residents of Kern County are given preference over residents from other communities. For eligibility, guidelines to apply for voucher assistance or to get more information, visit hcv.kernha.org.

• Kern Economic Development Corporation hosts the 2022 State of the County, Saturday, Jan. 29, 7–8 p.m. This is a virtual event, held at www.kernedc.com. Featuring Kern County Board of Supervisors Chairman Zack Scrivner, county community leaders come together to discuss the upcoming year. • Possible Selves, a film by Shaun Kadlec, premiers online in The Human Rights Watch Film Festival, held virtually February 1. This major documentary follows the unique experiences of two local youths growing up within the foster care system from childhood to college graduation. Tickets for this online event are $9. • Lebec County Water District’s Water Rate Adjustment Public Hearing is Thursday, Feb. 3, 6 p.m. online via Zoom. • A Craft Show to benefits Friends of the Library is Saturday, Feb. 5. Interested craft vendors are encouraged to visit the library for more details and to sign up. Friends of the Library is a non-profit organization that supports many of Frazier Park Library’s activities.

• Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve offers Docent Training, Saturday, Feb. 19 and Saturday, Feb. 26. Trainees must attend both training days, be 18 years or older and are expected to adhere to covid-19 guidelines. More information will be available in the coming weeks.
