• Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve begins Docent Training today, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. (15101 Lancaster Rd., Lancaster). Trainees must attend both training days (today and Saturday, Feb. 26), be 18 years or older and are expected to adhere to covid-19 guidelines. • Lockwood Hillbillies return to La Sierra Mexican restaurant as their live musical guests, 6 p.m. (3500 Mt Pinos Way, Frazier Park). They’ll be playing every Saturday, and also every Tuesday as well.

• Want to become a wildland firefighter? Applications for paid training and on call assignments with the Sundowner Handcrew on Los Padres National Forest’s Ojai Ranger District open today and will remain open for only six days. This application is geared towards entry level applicants. Upon training completion, participants will be available for fire assignments on the Los Padres National forest and other neighboring forests. • How to Praise Children for Growth, a free workshop for parents, is 7 p.m., held online via Zoom and hosted by the Mountain Communities Family Resource Center in partnership with First 5 Kern and California Family Resource Association. This meeting brings parents together for a conversation about fostering a ‘grit and growth’ mindset. Zoom meeting ID is 853 5687 3604, and all are invited! Participants will receive a book and a $50 prepaid gas card thanks to the generosity of the CFRA.

• The Earth Organization hosts ‘How to Make Your World More Fun,’ Saturday, Feb. 26, 2–3:30 p.m at the Earth Organization in PMC (for location, see story on page 10-11). This event is for students 10–14 years old. Parents are encouraged to attend. Hear wildlife rescue stories and learn how ‘cooperative ecology’ can make life more fun. $5 per student, parents are free. Call 747.221.2225 to reserve a spot by Friday, Feb. 25.

* Steve Kramer and the Divebar Messiahs return to PMC’s Condor Lounge Saturday, Feb. 26, 7:30–11 p.m. If you’ve missed the 60s and 70s rockin’ stylings of Divebar Steve—or dancing music in general—come on out and shake a leg.

• Kern Community Foundation’s Kern Futures Scholarship application period is still open until March 1. Graduating high school seniors planning to attend college, university or an accredited technical school are encouraged to apply. • Open Mic Night is 6 p.m. on the first Friday of every month at La Sierra Mexican Restaurant (3500 Mt. Pinos Way, FP). Bring your song, poem, or even just tell a story. The next Open Mic is Friday, March 4.

• The Housing Choice Voucher waiting list is now open. This waiting list has not been reopened since 2012. Voucher recipients are selected randomly each month. Residents of Kern County are given preference over residents from other communities. For eligibility, guidelines to apply for voucher assistance or to get more information, visit hcv.kernha.org.

• Basket Weaving class is returning at Ridge Route Communities Museum & Historical Society! This famous and beloved workshop is Saturday, March 12, 10 a.m.–12 p.m., conducted by Bonnie Kane (3515 Park Drive, FP). The cost is $20 per person and includes all necessary materials. • The AARP Frazier Park Chapter Senior Exercise program continues every Monday and Thursday, 11 a.m.–noon. This program is held at the Frazier Park Community Center (3015 Mt. Pinos Way #201, FP). • Hey, we got weather (that one day)…have you gotten your Resident Permit yet? It can help you get past those road closures. When CHP sets up the snow visitor chain check line, you can be waved through if you display one for the current year. Permits are issued by Mountain Communities Chamber of Commerce and they are available for $6 each with proof of residence at the following locations:
