• Don’t miss your chance: The Ridge Route Road Tour is 10 a.m. Reservations are already full but the wait list is open. This three-hour tour from Gorman to the Tumble Inn comes with a guided historical narrative from museum docents, and includes a handout of photos from the old road stops. The cost is $15 per person. • Support Frazier Park Library’s youth programs by visiting the Friends of the Library Craft Sale, 10 a.m.–4 p.m., at Frazier Park Library (3732 Park Drive, FP). •Kids Korner, a new after-school program for ages 7–12, is every Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at Frazier Park Library (3732 Park Drive, Frazier Park). This program provides homework help and activities like arts and crafts, science experiments and games.

• The Chess Club is looking for new and advanced players every Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Centered in Christ Church (3509 Mt. Pinos Way, FP, across the street from La Sierra Mexican restaurant). This club, originally formed by the late Bill Hopper at the library, teaches young people the skills of chess. Parents are encouraged to bring their children and stay to play. • Ready, Set, GO! It’s Wildfire Preparedness Week. Are you Prepared? California has proclaimed this week Wildfire Preparedness Week, Sun. May 1–Sat., May 7. Kern County Fire wants to make sure you and your family are ready in case of emergency due to wildfire. They have provided resources on their website to help residents prepare their homes and action plans for threat of wildfire. Visit Kerncountyfire.org for tips, checklists, action plans and defensible space guidelines for brush clearance – due no later than June 1!

• Wind Wolves Preserve hosts the Science Sleuths, their new program for young adventurers, 10–12 a.m. (16019 Hwy 166, Bakersfield CA, 93311). Does your kid enjoy puzzles and scavenger hunts? Science Sleuths work as a team to solve clues with preserve naturalists. Registration is free. This event is for ages 10 and up. • See through the eyes of local youth at Artworks Community Gallery in the Frazier Mountain High School Student Art Show, open Fri., May 13 through Sun., May 15, 11–4 a.m. (16233 Pine Valley Lane, PMC), with a reception to meet the artists Sat., May 21, 5–8:30 p.m. This installation is open to the public, and all proceeds from sales go directly to the students. • A Free Residential Hazardous Waste Collection event comes to Lebec, Saturday, May 28, 9 a.m.–1 p.m. at the Lebec Transfer Station (300 Landfill Road, Lebec). Batteries, motor oil, paints, light bulbs, sharps, pool chemicals, cleaning products and other things too toxic for landfills can be disposed of during this event.
