Fire on Frazier Mountain knocked down

FRAZIER PARK, CA (Sunday, Sept. 14, 2014 at  6 p.m.)—U.S.Forest Service Wildland Firefighting Division Chief John Abell reports that at about 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Kern County Fire Department’s Station  57 and the USFS responded to a call about a fire on Frazier Mountain. Abell said he went up on San Carlos Drive near the bank to locate the source of smoke at the top of Frazier Mountain. Then USFS units headed up to the source of the smoke.

Fixed wing craft made two fire retardant drops and a USFS helicopter dropped two loads of water to stop the fire. Hand crews were still working at 6 p.m. to mop up hot spots. An engine stayed on-site all night, Abell said, and a crew will continue to mop up hot spots on Monday. “We mapped it at a half acre,” Abell said.

“There was a lot of smoke because  there is heavy timber up there and lots of fuel on the ground,” Abell explained.  He added that the cause is under investigation.
