Educator and Piñon Pines realtor Michi Knight is distributing flyers about the Thursday, May 3 community brainstorm at Cuddy Hall next week. She laughs that “cookies and creativity” are the secret ingredients for rallying teamwork to help local schools provide rich opportunities for students.

“There is plenty of good news here,” El Tejon Unified School District Trustee Ken Hurst said Friday. Knight and the Chamber of Commerce are inviting the community—and that means everyone (see the invitation at right and the text below)—to discover what resources we can all bring, to build on the assets of this region and create solutions to the challenges [outlined in the "Schools at a Risky Crossroad" in The Mountain Enterprise].

Optimism is contagious. Amid discussion last week on how to successfully downsize, Hurst said he is proud this is a gang-free, positive environment to raise children, “and the high school has more electives this year, and will have even more next year,” he said. Parents were able to save sports from the budget knife last year when they formed carpools to transport students to games. The girls Falcon soccer team went on to win the High Desert League championship for the first time in 13 years.

TEXT OF THE FLYER FOR THE MAY 3 COMMUNITY MEETING:

You are invited to an evening of
Creativity, Community, Collaboration
(& Cookies!)

Thursday, May 3
7 p.m.
Cuddy Hall, Lake of the Woods

This will be a fun meeting to share ideas (and dessert) for improving the education of our children, both in and out of school. We hope to get a diverse group of people: educators, artists, parents, musicians, students, mechanics, athletes, gardeners…you name it, for the purpose of brainstorming creative ways to help all of our children and schools. Attendees are welcome, but not required, to bring a dessert to share as well. All community members welcome!

Sponsored by: The Lake of the Woods Property Owners Association and the Mountain Communities Chamber of Commerce. For more information, contact Michi Knight: michi.knight@gmail.com
