160 Stranded in Mountain Camps

Mike Parker drrove Southern Kern Search and Rescue vehicle down newly-plowed Darling Avenue to transport some of the stranded youth camp members from Bethel in the Hills.

  • The Boy Scouts of America Camp at Mil Potrero Park was hosting a group of about 80 youth and counselors from the About Face Cadet Corps (AFCC) youth program. Here, rescued AFCC members transfer their gear from the county buses to their chartered schoolbuses.

Looking like refugees, 80 Bethel in the Hills campers in Cuddy Valley had to walk through the snow to a point on Steinhoff Road where Southern Kern Search and Rescue could shuttle them to buses waiting in Lebec; 80 more campers were evacuated from the Mil Potrero Boy Scout Camp.

Members of the First Assembly of God Church from Lancaster were taken to Flying J where they boarded a bus for home. According to staff member Jill Borg, the kids weren’t worried. “It was pretty much a party atmosphere until 2 a.m. this morning,” she laughed.

Meanwhile, The Boy Scouts of America Camp at Mil Potrero Park was hosting a group of about 80 youth and counselors from the About Face Cadet Corps (AFCC) youth program. On Monday, March 21, U.S. Forest Service plows worked to clear roads into that area. Snowcats, four-wheel drive trucks and a large Kern County Fire Department bus were used to ferry the group up the Mil Potrero Highway “S” curves. They were delivered to their chartered school bus waiting in Lebec. Here, rescued AFCC members transfer their gear from the county buses to their chartered schoolbuses.
