Jayson Schimmel Found Guilty on All Counts in Death of Baby Son

Reported by Alex Wilson
VENTURA, CA (Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at 11 a.m.)—After a day and a half of deliberation, the jury in the case of Jayson Schimmel came back with guilty verdicts on all three counts regarding the injury and death of Schimmel’s two month old baby, Steven.

Judge Patricia Murphy opened the jury’s verdict. Schimmel was found guilty of assault of a child causing death, which carries a 25 years-to-life sentence; guilty of second degree murder; and guilty of count three, which was inflicting corporal injury on a child (in a separate incident).

Sentencing has been set for July 18. It is likely that the sentences will be run concurrently for counts 1 and 2. Schimmel showed little visible reaction in the courtroom. Elizabeth Hill, the baby’s mother, was not present for the reading of the verdict.
