FRAZIER PARK, CA (Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2021 at 8:15 p.m.)—The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has distributed a press release regarding a deputy involved shooting this afternoon:
According to the LASD statement, a deputy from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle on a frontage road of the southbound I-5 Freeway about one mile north of Templin Highway in Gorman.
During the traffic stop, the deputy told the driver to exit the vehicle and was escorting him back to his patrol car when the suspect broke free and ran.
The suspect ran up an embankment. The deputy returned to his patrol car, and reversed to an access road. The suspect ran back to his vehicle.
The deputy chased the suspect on foot. An altercation ensued at the door of the suspect’s vehicle. The suspect drove away, “dragging the deputy with him,” the KCSO report states.
The suspect crashed through a chain-link fence leading to the southbound I-5 shoulder. He then crashed again through the fence back to the frontage road “and a deputy involved shooting occurred.”
The suspect was struck by gunfire and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The sheriff’s report states that a handgun was recovered at the scene “where the suspect was sitting.”
The deputy was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for his injuries and released.
