Reading program still needs volunteers—Training and information date set for Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2:30 p.m.

UPDATE—A training session has been set for volunteers interested in helping with the United Way’s Community Reading Program. The training, information meeting and training refresher is Tuesday, Sept. 23 at Frazier Park School, from 2:30 until
about 4 p.m. in the teacher’s lounge, just beyond the school office.

Michael Forrester is coordinating the program. He writes:
1) Mrs. Edwards and I [2nd Grade teachers] are running the program
Monday through Friday from 9-10 a.m.
2) A volunteer would come in just one day a week for that one hour. The hour is divided into 15-minute segments for volunteers to listen to a total of four students read, one-on-one. They will be the same four students all semester.

Please come to the training Tuesday, Sept. 23 even if you have not yet been fingerprinted.
3) You must be fingerprinted in order to participate. Even if you’ve
been fingerprinted for your job or for some other program, you must be
fingerprinted again for this project. The good news is that it’s free.
You just need to call Dolores Jimenez at 661-636-4672 for an
appointment. If you volunteered last year, and your fingerprints cleared, you
don’t have to have it done again.

Reading program still needs volunteers  [September 12 story]
By Anita Anderson
Principal Keri St. Jeor of Frazier Park School said he is hoping to get the United Way’s Community Reading Program going this month. He is eager to start the program in his school.

Each volunteer donates only one hour a week at the school. They listen to individual second graders read to them. Reading skills for the students often progress a full grade in one semester, according to reports from the Kern County Superintendent of Schools (KCSOS).

Volunteers are fingerprinted by KCSOS for the LifeScan system, but there is no cost to the volunteers. The United Way covers those expenses.

To volunteer, email or phone Michael Forrester today (mforrester@el-tejon.k12.ca.us or 661.245.3312). He is a second grade teacher.

The date for an orientation and training session will be provided to reading program volunteers soon.
